AUGUST 2017 DOINGS

Well the balance of the MIXED BUSINESS CDs have gone South into Zarsoff care.

We took a visit out to the Spot in the Forest where Iz was found in 2014. Steve Batty had made a plaque for Izzy’s iron bark benches out there and Koala John had screwed it in and we went to take a look at how things were. Its dusty right now but the Uke and Buddha and Cross are all still surviving.

BRANCO FROM WOLLONGONG

Last night a call came in. Pretty Late. The Transitional Branko was heading South from Brisbane to his hometown of Wollongong to begin the next chapter of his life – guitars in tow. He had crossed the Bellinger when he realised how close he was to Izzy’s abode so he made the call and was awarded the Van that the Flood went through for his accommodation instead of parking up against a wall in Kempsey as he had planned.

Late night talks and a good sleep and Branko is somewhere down that long and winding road. Listen out for his name and his music in the Gong.

R.I.P. RORY ZARSOFF

Rory ( DANNY HAYNES )passed away this week. We will let you know more as we hear of it.

Rory Zarsoff. Closest to camera playing the beaten up Fender Stratocaster.

Izzy Foreal on bass. Arfur Zarosff (Peter Northcott) and on drums, Lefty aka Daryl McKenzie.

After the last ‘classic’ line up of The Zarsoff Brothers splits up on September 30th 1984 when Bluey and Bernie leave, the three remaining members (Daryl McKenzie on drums, Danny Haynes on guitar and Izzy Foreal in white overalls), take one of the two Peter Northcotts on board on guitar and saxophone, as ‘Arfur Zarsoff’ (which makes no sense whatsoever in connection with the Zarsoff joke, but it was his idea …). Arfur’s stint starts on October 9th, 1984 (Bankstown RSL), and ends on February 27th, 1985 (Long Bay Gaol). In this stint, ‘Cranky Zarsoff’ (the late Peter Kekel) joins on keys (November 7th 1984 at Sweethearts) and leaves again some time before February 19th, 1985 (he doesn’t appear in the band’s live video at Hawkesbury Sports Club on that date). Things go decidedly haywire after this.

About HGWT

Originally founded in Armidale (NSW) as S.T.D. Music, Hire and Promotion (1983) by Clay Djubal, Have Gravity Will Threaten (HGWT) is an independent specialist publisher of music, plays, poetry and images from writers, musicians, composers, bands and photographers who emerged out of the New England region of New South Wales during the ‘pub rock’ era of the 1970s and 1980s. After being based in Sydney during the mid- late 1980s HGWT was re-established in Stafford Heights (Brisbane) in 1993.

WRAPPING SEPTEMBER UP

BEEN a busy Springtime . Izzy took a week’s break to travel South. Sunday 21st September he conducted a workshop at the CLARENCE VALLEY CONSERVATORIUM in GRAFTON and then headed down to Bellingen and up to Armidale. The Galloway Gig fell through due to the  fear that he might use the word ‘PISS’ and embarrass us all.

MUSICIANS IN THE NEWS

FROM THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL LIBRARY HISTORIC NEWSPAPERS.

A TOUCH OF THE PAST.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

IZZY OWES HIS CONTINUITY OF VISION, AS WELL AS HIS ADDICTION TO APPLAUSE AND LAUGHTER, TO THE MUSICIANS WHO HAVE PRECEDED HIM THROUGHOUT HISTORY

MUSICAL MEN.–Generally speaking, musicians are the most intolerant of men to one another, the most captious, the best humoured when flattered, and the worst tempered at all other times. Music, like laudanum, appears to soothe the senses when used in moderation, but the continual employment of either flurries or excites the faculties, and often renders the best natured men in the world, petulant, irritable, and violent.- Madden.

” Indeed, the mighty changes we have wrought, forcibly remind us of a passage in an old author we have met with somewhere, and which, by way of episode, we will endeavour to recollect for the instruction of those who will make the application :-A certain minstrel once boasted of being able to make a marvellous impression upon the people, after the ancient fashion, by means of his lyre ; and, one day, when there was a quarrel out of doors, undressed as he was, saith the history, he jumps out into his balcony, his lyre in his hand, in his slippers, with his breeches hanging down to his ancles, a stocking upon his head, and an old tattered waistcoat upon his body. He touched his lyre with a very unusual sort of flourish, nor were his hopes frustrated. The odd equipage, the uncouth instrument, and the strangeness of the man and of the music, drew the ears and the eyes of the whole mob …. ”

SYDNEY GAZETTE 1830

Extraordinary. The young Ducornet, born without arms, and who paints so surprisingly well with his feet, has to encounter a more astonishing rival in the person of a young girl at Bourdeaux. She has neither arms nor feet, yet writes, draws, knits, loads a pistol-with her mouth. She is also a musician, and plays upon the piano with her nose. This young person is besides remarkable for her beauty.-Foreign Literary Gas.

GENIUS

ALL hear and see much alike ; but there is an undefinable though wide difference between the ear of the musician, or the eye of the painter, compared with the hearing and seeing organs of ordinary men ; and it is something like that difference in which genius consists.
