Izzy Foreal performs semi-acoustically with Shaz & Karl Mullan, whose acoustified contemporary covers and traditional tunes augment Izzy’s ’21st-century skiffle’ perfectly.
Izzy Foreal – bassist, vocalist, kazooist and general comedic entertainer – has been performing in Australia for a significant number of years. His present penchant is for semi-acoustic performance in cafes and smaller rock venues, though he is perhaps most infamous as frontperson with Sydney-based comedy rock band The Zarsoff Brothers (from 1979, with occasional special appearances even today). He also played bass and shared front buffoonery in The 69ers, beginning in 1970, and finishing some time in the second half of the 1970s.
Karl (new zealand) & Sharon (Ireland) Mullan perform as ‘KSM’ in cafes and acoustic venues around the northern rivers area of New South Wales, and have appeared regularly at the Emporium Cafe’s monthly music café night in South Grafton with Izzy. Their acoustified renditions of contemporary and traditional tunes are a perfect compliment to Izzy’s musical skullduggery, as a successful joint performance at the Ilnam Estate Winery in Carool (NSW) proved.

This month sees long time supporters of the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter, THE TRAVELLING GRANNIES, commencing fund raising activities . I don’t know the TRAVELLING GRANNIES but I spotted the article in the DAILY EXAMINER  and they sound worthy of support. They are due to set out on a horse riding excursion from KARANGI to COUTTS CROSSING on 28 AUGUST ‘09. Music Cafe this week with Izzy as M.C. starts off the money raising. What a Great Combo – a terrific service in the WESPTAC RESCUE HELICOPTER and  a unique way to raise funds.

PASTA. PASTA. PASTA. Peter has Pasta on the menu this month. One thing suits Iz and the Chick very well and that’s the Emporium’s vegetarian options. They are DELICIOUS, NEVER DULL and ENORMOUS. IZZY ON THE CLARENCE

Foreal Enterprises have now relocated to the Clarence River NSW. The relocation did manage to coincide with the Major Flood of 2009 which threatened their new premises and led to isolation by dark and muddy waters for a week. Izzy was unable to peform at the Greenmount Gig in Coolangatta with Scrubby ( BLIND WILLIE WAGTAIL) and missed two LUFFLEY Gigs despite a valiant effort to reach the 2nd one via the SUMMERLAND WAY. ________________ The gig he has been able to cross flooded waters and reach is the MUSIC CAFE at the EMPORIUM in SOUTH GRAFTON. Not a bad way to be welcomed to a new community. No cash involved but Iz says he’s being paid in cosmic tender. Music Cafe charges $3 entry and that $3 goes to one local charity each month. Izzy also says that its a good way to absorb the Grafton Musical Culture and begin to see where he might fit. Music Cafe covers an age range from schoolkids to elders and a wide  musical spectrum including harpists, rockers, rhythm and blues, banjo, novices, loonies, folk and one powerful rendition of Hallelujah by a young woman with an enviable voice and persona. AUSTRALIA DAY AT ILNAM WINERY

 

 

THE BIG I IN THE BIG 6 0 This post might not seem to have much to do with Izzy’s musical life, per se as they say. Nevertheless, there is something about Izzy’s life on the Hill in Bilambil that is entirely musical. He says its “almost like being back at the Ball Pants”. A Foreal leap in imagery is required for that one but if you are of the generation that held hands in the 60s and 70s or wish you had been, you might be able to do it. All he knows is that he feeds the wild birds that come each day, picks some salad from his own vegie garden, cooks up a fine Korma Curry while Chick gets dressed up for the  night and off they go in the StarWagon up into the Hills which are alive with the Sound of Music and out comes the Carool and Bilambil community, his friends and co-Musos.	The lineup last night included; JOHNNY CARR IZZY FOREAL ROB BROWN BOBBY SYMES MARK QUINN DIGGER REVEL JOHN SUTTON
SUNDAY 25 JANUARY 2009 That’s Jenny on the right. She’s off to Scotland and England with her sister before meeting John in Paris. The gentleman with arms folded and in humidity relieving singlet is JOHNNY CARR. Band Leader Extraordinaire and local resident.	Ilnam Winery hosted the CAROOL Community gathering. The day brooded with tropical rains and Johnny Sutton reports that as a result of rain on the roof he was almost inaudible for the birthday party of 30 or so as he made his last Ilnam appearance for 3 months. John Sutton is off to Europe through Portugal and Spain before meeting up with his Jenny in Paris. Towards evening the rain eased a little although steaming mists and dark clouds remained and Izzy and Chick took the Carool Road undaunted. The Community gathered en masse amongst the vineyards. The traditional ‘bring a plate’ was followed and, as always, that meant some very fine food in vast quantities as well as plenty of the local Vino.
	The Carool concept of ‘bring a plate’ included some very large containers. Chrissie and Ione are seen here, removing foil and gladwrap covers. Ione at front takes a large slice of mother Andrea’s tomato and basil pie. Ione starts 2009 at SCU in Tweed.
Darcy, Geoff and Johnny Carr. That’s Bass, Rhythm and Lead.	Izzy came to the Tweed a few years back on his way through to work at the Uni in Brisbane, with no intention of staying but found himself playing music almost from the first day. The connections this created with the community have gradually strengthened over the three years. Last night’s community gathering gave him a sense of belonging. (Yes Izzy actually said that -now he says he meant CONNECTION – an equally esoteric term). He knows that 3 years still makes him a blow in but friendships are forming. “It ain’t so bad being a Fool on The Hill in this here Valley.”
	Mark Quinn prop of the ILNAM ESTATE WINERY is vocalist and harmonica player with Johnny Carr and the Glengarries.
Izzy had his 1960 Kaye Bass with him but Johnny Sutton was already set up with his FENDER PRECISION BASS ( mid to late 60s) and graciously  gave him use of it for the evening. “A fine old and worthy instrument” says Iz. “Aren’t we all ? ” says the Chick. ” Aren’t we all?”
The 60s retro songs were a hit again. Lots of SHA LA LA ing going on.
Iz was pretty impressed with ROB BROWN on drums. A drummer with funk who could play with IZZY FOREAL AND ASSOCIATES and fit right in. He did quail a little at the MUSTANG SALLY request and asked “DO WE HAVE TO?” but had it come to it, methinks he would have played along.
	DON’T FORGET IZZY AND SCRUBBY WILL BE AT ILNAM THE LAST SUNDAY OF FEBRUARY,MARCH AND JUNE 2009. 12 NOON TILL 3PM.

A SUMMER FLURRY

PHONE has been ringing hot today. End result for Izzy is an end of year flurry of HILLBILLY BLUES BANDITZ gigs. A Gaggle of Gigs. They include:
Lennox as previously announced. Saturday Night December 13th. The next day- Sunday 14 December – RIVERVIEW HOTEL at MURWILLUMBAH with a fine view of the River (obviously) and of Mt Warning. That’s a 2pm start. Sunday 28th enjoy your post Xmas Music at ILNAM WINERY CAROOL – 12- 3.30pm and then Izzy is down to BYRON RAILS for the evening performance. January 4 with Scrubby at the newly re-opened Aussie Tavern in Murwillumbah. Not forgetting LUFFLEY CAFE on Friday 19th December.

Also attended the NEWLING PUBLIC SCHOOL end of the year concert held in the OLD ARMIDALE TECHERS’ COLLEGE. The night was a ripper with audience applause at max. Scripted by one of the teachers. NOVEMBER APPROACHES

November approaches. November 1 sees  THE HILLBILLY BLUES BANDITZ down at DUNOON SPORTS CLUB not far out of Lismore. This should be a JOLLEY good time. Not quite sure what’s happening there but have already heard some familiar names lined up to play.

November 9 and Izzy is down at CLARENCE VALLEY CONSERVATORIUM and then off on a SOUTHERN TOUR incorporating BELLINGEN, the WARM SUNSHINE gig and up to the NEW ENGLAND.

Looks Luffley Friday Nights as booked and HILLBILLIES are down LENNOX, BYRON AND BRUNSWICK. Details as they come to hand.

3 GIGS AND 2 NEW ROADIES

Last weekend Izzy played Luffley with Scrubby PETER HURCOMBE and Kel on Friday Night and on Saturday, Scrub and Iz did a party down past Richard’s Deviation. Theme was Green and Purple with men allowed if they were wearing TIGHTS – and indeed they were. Murwillumbah Magic it was down there in the Hills. This was a big weekend for Izzy with a NEW ROAD CREW. Sunday was ILNAM WINERY with PETER LAWSON.   We will have more about the ROAD CREW as time passes.

In rehearsal at this time are; ZARSOFFS , YESTERBEATS and HILlBIlLY BLUES BANDITS. Izzy’s children’s CD is well underway.
